The flight deck position of Flight Engineer is nowadays only seen on large older generation of aircraft. The advent of computer technology, reliable software and a desire of the airlines to cut operational costs have led to the removal of the flight engineers position in modern aircraft.
Older aircraft that still employ aviation personnel in the flight engineer role are; Airbus A300-B4, early Boeing 747, Boeing 727, the Lockheed L-1011 Tristar, McDonnell Douglas DC-10 and the Tupolev Tu-154s.
On the new generation two-man flight deck aircraft, sensors and computers monitor and adjust aircraft systems automatically. All critical gauges and controls are now within easy reach of the two pilots through the advancement of multi screen displays and multi function controls, controls and displays that were once the makeup of the flight engineers station.
