Airport Security refers to methods and techniques used in protecting airports and aircraft from crime and terrorism. Airport security provides defense by attempting to stop would-be attackers from bringing bombs or weapons into the airport.
A variety of process’ and equipment is used throughout the world. A metal detector can quickly screen passengers, whilst checked hold luggage and carry on bags are checked through X-ray and explosive trace-detection portal machines. Some airports are considering new methods of screening passengers to further airport security, such as passenger advanced X-ray machines that provide a 360-degree view of a person, as well as “see” under clothes, right down to the skin and bones.
In some countries, specially trained individuals may engage passengers in a conversation to detect threats rather than solely relying on equipment and machines to find threats. Other countries employ a sky marshal, air marshal or flight marshal, who is an undercover law enforcement or counter terrorist agent, to travel on board commercial flights to counter aircraft hijackings.
Other airport security methods used are the inclusion of perimeter fences that are patrolled by security staff or monitored by cameras to prevent unauthorized intrusion from personnel or vehicles originating outside airport property.
